Note

In January 1858, a scheme for building two racquet courts in the College was discussed by the Fellows. A plan and an estimate for two open racquet courts was obtained from Mr Tompkins [a builder]. The plans went before the Master and Fellows at a meeting on 18 March 1858. Discussion on the project was delayed until 22 March to allow for a statement of the general principles upon which the racquet courts would be conducted. The following scheme was submitted to the Master and Seniors:

  • 1: That two open Racquet Courts and a dressing room be built at an estimated outlay of £1000.00
  • 2: that this sum be raised in 100 shares of £10 each
  • 3: That as soon as the shares are taken up a meeting of the Shareholders be called, and a Committee of Management be appointed by them.
  • 4: That the management of the courts be entrusted to this committee subject to the general contol o f the Master & Seniors.
  • 5: That from the profits of the courts an annual dividend of 5% be paid upon the capital invested, and that any excess be applied to the diminution of the capital invested.
  • 6: That when the whole capital bas been thus paid off the courts become the property of the College.
