Note

Praelector: A college officer charged with the presentation of College members for their degrees. The title derives from the days when praelectors were the appointed teaching officers of a college and so the obvious persons to sign supplicats testifying that candidates for degrees were duly qualified.

Note

Supplicat: Technically all degrees are conferred as a result of a grace, and all those about to graduate must request, or supplicate for, such a grace. Supplicats, which survive physically from the late 16th century, were commonly signed by the College lecturers, or praelectors who could vouch for their pupils’ fitness for a degree; and the title ‘praelector’ is still in use for the College officer whose duty it is to present graduands in the Senate House .

Archivist's note

The College Officer who in the old book of instructions (late 18th century) is called Deputy Lecturer was in the late 19th century commonly called 'Father' of the College, but his official title in the University is 'Praelector', and this title he adds to his signture in all supplicats.
