Four cartoons (drawings), undated, by office of Clayton and Bell for figures of the 'illustriores' painted on the chapel ceiling, but only one, that of St Edmund king and martyr (d. 869), was executed. The others are St. Peter, St. Stephen and St. Oswald king and martyr (d. 642). Also includes printed notice regarding the cartoons printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press Cambridge 1991 (two copies: the one with the faded red ink was in a frame in the Chapel or choir office and was transferred to the archives in 2021).

Note

The figure of St Oswald was apparently model for that of emperor Otho I, on the ceiling. Pencil, fully-achieved drawings. Endorsed on (former ref.) MPSC7.85 is 'cartoons, figures'. A letter, 8 June, 1866, Clayton & Bell to the Senior Bursar, mentions that 'we have sent four cartoons of figures drawn to scale that may invite criticism'. These were originally rolled, but were hung on acid-free manila and faced with melinex June 1986.
