Note
Fines for non-attendance at Chapel ceased in 1866, but undergraduates were still required to attend Chapel five times per week including once on Sunday. If they did not meet this requirement they could be 'gated'. The Junior Dean was responsible for punishing those who did not attend chapel.
Gateing was disciplinary restriction on a student, forbidding them to leave their College within stated hours; in other words, to observe a curfew.
