History

Admitted at Balliol College, Oxford 1923, first class degree 1926. Studied at Princeton 1928-32 under Oswald Veblen and published, with Veblen, 'The Foundations of Differential Geometry' in 1932. Became Fellow and Tutor at Balliol 1933. Elected F. R. S. in 1944. Wayneflete Professor of Pure Mathematics at Oxford 1947-60. President of London Mathematical Society 1953-5.
