History
Literary editor and poet. John Collings Squire was born 2 April 1884 in Plymouth, the son of a veterinary surgeon. He read history at St John’s College, BA 1906. He was the literary editor of the New Statesman from 1914 to 1919 (under the name Solomon Eagle), was a columnist and literary critic for the Observer and Illustrated London News, the acting editor of the New Statesman 1917-18, the founder and editor of the London Mercury and the chairman of London Mercury Ltd from 1919 to 1934. He wrote many books of poetry and literary criticism and was knighted in 1933. He died in 1958.
