History

Main came up to St John's in 1858, and graduated BA in 1862 as 6th Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos. He was elected to a Fellowship in 1863, which he held until his death, and served his college as Lecturer in Chemistry and Superintendent of the College Laboratory from 1869 to 1899. He was also Treasurer of Newnham College (1880-7, 1891-2) and Lecturer in Chemistry at Girton College (1873-99). Main's best-known work is his 'An introduction to plane astronomy', first published in 1865. He died in his rooms at St John's in May 1899.
