19 notebooks containing mathematical notes and examples, possibly used by Parkinson for coaching students. Topics covered include: Newton, dynamics, hydrostatics, tides, statics, instruments, undulatory theory, mechanics, and planetary theory.

Letters and picture (dated 1812-1955), documents relating to Herschel's 1839 paper, 'The Art of Photography', given to the Royal Society, (dated 1833-1979), Herschel's notebooks.

The collection comprises manuscripts, typescripts, letters, papers, lectures, notebooks, diaries, photographs, slides, film, audiotapes, reprints, preprints, books and artefacts.

Manuscript papers and a few notebooks consisting of notes and calculations. The majority of the material relates to astronomy and optics and dates from 1854-90.

Letters (dated 1793-1865); correspondence between Thomas Smart Hughes and John Lee and other documents relating to Payssio Tipaldo, Archimandrite of Cephalonia (dated 1824-5); diaries and sketchbooks

The papers comprise Adams's correspondence, notes and diaries, correspondence after his death, transcripts of correspondence and papers made for Donald MacAlister, biographical and miscellaneous material.

Manuscript notebooks in various hands on mathematics, astronomy, moral and natural philosophy, theology and classics, with some printed items.

Declines offer of Plumian Chair of astronomy but is flattered by sentiments expressed. Herschel states that he is not sure whether he wants to concentrate solely on astronomy after he has completed his father's work on nebulae. He feels he is better as a private amateur than as a professor and also wishes to pursue other lines of work
