Reports that the Syndics of the [Cambridge University] Press have asked him to edit a 'Companion to Latin studies'. Asks whether Glover will contribute and mentions terms and deadlines. Refers to Glover's plan to lecture in Oxford in the Michaelmas term.

Explains why he is declining Glover's invitation to him to act as Deputy Orator during July. Agrees that Glover's first duty is to Cambridge University. Looks forward to being presented by Glover on attaining the age of seventy-six and gives an overview of his appointments and publications.

Reflects that that afternoon marks the end of his 30 year tenure at Merton House and also the 50 years in which he has had rooms in the College.

Remarks that he has not found the leisure that he hoped to gain from his resignation because his time has been taken up answering letters on the subject.
