Has received his father's letter which as he expected, advised against changing Colleges. Lays out the case for changing Colleges in great detail, including discussions of money, Fellowships and the level of instruction at a smaller College. Also recounts his being 'confined to Walls' after a disagreement about attending mathematics lectures with Mr Evans, one of the assistant tutors.

Sends a College Bill and explains it. Has not any more pupils for the long vacation, and does not believe he will be getting anymore. States that it is a bad time for classical scholars, though an acquaintance of his, a tutor at King's, has told him that he would have been able to send him four pupils if he had received his BA sooner. Discusses his father's advice with regard to the Public Orator and has decided to 'be silent and retain [his] own opinion.' Notes his contact with 'young Finch' and suggests his father invites him to visit. Has had a dinner party and tells of his guests, noting that he did not invite Neville [son of the Master of Magdalene] due the coolness of his father's reception at Magdalene previously. Also notes that it is the subject of ridicule that the Master of Magdalene 'designs to smuggle his son through the BA examination'. Tells of the 'plucking' of a Nobleman, Lord Haddo, and is generally disparaging towards the class, saying they 'promote ildleness, expense and dissipation' and are 'invariably attended by … toadies, sycophants and tuft-hunters.' Gives news of acquaintances, and notes that he now has 'an excellent cellar'

Has decided not to change College, as he believes his father is against it. Has also discussed it with a friend and an assistant tutor who advised against it. Has been unwell due to exertions at rowing and getting ducked in the water.

Gives information regarding his College life, including Mr Martin being his private tutor, a visit from the Master, the whereabouts of acquaintances and also the refitting of his rooms. Also discusses, proudly, his winning of the 'Pelham Prize' [Awarded at Shrewsbury School] and the praise given him by Dr Butler.

Discusses his chance of getting a Fellowship at St John's and believes it to be slight. Notes he has thought of migrating to Pembroke as a Fellowship is worth more, and there is more chance of getting one. Also believes that it would be prove to be more advantageous in supporting his future at the Bar. Asks for more money.

A.L., s. from Thomas Ashe to W. D. Adams

Thanks for a compliment in wishing to include some of TA's songs in WDA's book and asks for a copy of the book. Bemoans paying a publishers £50 for publishing his 'Songs Now and Then'.
