Will do whatever he can to help a Mr Stephenson. Is in Capetown for the departure of MacKenzie for the Zambesi though may have to miss the occasion which will be annoying after a journey of 1000 miles and the interruption in important work in Natal. Describes the problems involved in transporting the Bishops of Grahamstown and St Helena to Capetown and the problems involved in Church administration in South Africa.

States that the Matzana enquiry has ended and does not hold out much hope as to the outcome. Feels sure that 'Sir GW [Garnet Wolesey] will do all he possibly can to prevent any proper notice being taken of the transaction which reflects such discredit on Mr T Shepstone, as well as his brother.' Discusses the failure of a subscription list which was to divert church contributions to the Natal Diocese. Believes that he may retire on a pension if no further funds are forthcoming, but would not return to England.
