Book by J.A. Green published by Springer Verlag as volume 830 in the 'Lecture notes in mathematics' series in 1980. Based on lectures given at Yale University during the spring semester 1980, while the author was receiving the kind support and hospitality of Yale University and the National Science Foundation (NSF contract MCS 79-04473). Earlier versions were given at the University of Warwick, England and at the University of Essen, Germany.

Photocopy of preface and pages 11-16 of 'Our speaker today' by F.J. Craveiro de Carvalho et al., published by the Departamento de Matemática Universidade da Coimbra 1999; together with an email from the author to J.A. Green asking for his permission to reproduce an interview with him for the publication, and a page of typed notes about Green's association with the University of Coimbra. The interview covers Green's early life, his connections with Portugal, his experiences at Bletchley Park and Max Newman, Thatcherism and its influence on British education, whether 3 or 4-year university courses are best, and his retirement.

Regrets that JAG has not accepted a post in Cambridge and understands the stated reasons. Commiserates about ‘inflexible arrangements’ at Cambridge and asks that he be allowed to use JAG’s letter as evidence in attempts to remedy the situation
