Based on lectures given at Yale University during the spring semester 1980, while the author was receiving the kind support and hospitality of Yale University and the National Science Foundation (NSF contract MCS 79-04473). Earlier versions were given at the University of Warwick, England and at the University of Essen, Germany.

Green asking for his permission to reproduce an interview with him for the publication, and a page of typed notes about Green's association with the University of Coimbra. The interview covers Green's early life, his connections with Portugal, his experiences at Bletchley Park and Max Newman, Thatcherism and its influence on British education, whether 3 or 4-year university courses are best, and his retirement.

TLS air letter dated 24 Apr 1961 from Sir William Hodge, Master of Pembroke College Cambridge to JAG, Princeton. Regrets that JAG has not accepted a post in Cambridge and understands the stated reasons. Commiserates about ‘inflexible arrangements’ at Cambridge and asks that he be allowed to use JAG’s letter as evidence in attempts to remedy the situation
