Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Encloses some letters from LeVerrier, brought back from Paris, which LeVerrier gave to be passed on to JCA. The attack on LeVerrier by Babinet appeared to be inspired by party feeling.

Encloses some sheets of Pt. 2 of Thomson and Tait's Natural Philosophy containing valuable contributions by George Darwin. High opinion of Darwin; would make excellent Plumian Professor. (Sheets possibly those at 44/6/2).

Letter signed to J.C. Adams

Question raised by Peters and Maxwell regarding periodic change of latitude in a period of 306 days should be fully investigated. Wishes to know whether any recent work has been done on the subject, and if not asks JCA to undertake it quickly so that results may be available for 2nd ed. of Thomson and Tait [Treatise on natural philosophy]
