Arranges a visit of one of his school fellows, Markham. Is complimentary of the 'conduct of the free and independent electors of your borough' and hopes it will be mentioned in 'the house'. Has been to a dinner which a civil engineer, Mr Adcock, attended where the subject of railroads was discussed, Mr Adcock declaring that the new Liverpool to Manchester line 'will be soon pronounced a failure: as it will soon be discovered that horses will carry heavy goods upon a rail road as quick as and much cheaper than steam locomotive engines.' Also notes that 'the election of the Duke of Sussex as President of the Royal Society was rather infra dig.'
