Has analysed material from one of the 'chewing gum' areas on the Archaeopteryx fossil, and found that its chemical composition is different to that of the stone matrix of the fossil. Thinks this is proof that the fossil 'is not genuine'.

Martin sent him a copy of FH's letter of 27 July. Is puzzled by FH's comment about the 'special negotiations' that the Royal Society were making regarding funding for the proposed Institute of Theoretical Astronomy. Has always thought that the proposed Institute should be an integral part of a university and be funded by the U.G.C.; any other source of funds would only be a stop gap. It is now too late for anything to happen in Cambridge for the Quinquennium. There might be support form the D.S.I.R. until the end of the quinquennium if the University is willing to take over after then, although this is unlikely. Did mention in confidence that the Royal Society would be willing to extend their research professorships if they were able to obtain enough funds. 'The net result seems to be that the chances of getting anything like an Institute established in Cambridge in the near future are really thin'. It might be possible for Sussex, as a new university, to get a grant from the U.G.C> during the next quinquennium.
