Inviting FH to write a short article for inclusion of the editorial section of the souvenir programme for the Big Bang City Ball. Suggests that an article on FH's coining the term 'big bang', and how the phrase is now 'thoughtlessly repeated all the time in the City' would be suitable. A photograph can be included if desired.

Regarding the grant application made by FH and Wickramasinghe in 1977. There is no time restriction on resubmission of applications, and there is no 'a priori reason against the provision of a computer at Dockray although of course a good case has to be made'. In the scientific aspect of applications, 'the Committees and their referees and assessors do seem to pay a great deal of attention to what is written in the application and regrettably in this case they seem to have been unconvinced by what they read'. A resubmission will therefore need a 'reasoned account in greater detail than has been given so far'. It was not clear to those who dealt with the application why the computation could not be carried out in Cardiff or Manchester.

Received FH's letter of 31 Oct. about the grant application from FH and Wickramasinghe only on 10 Nov., by which time FH had received a letter (of 4 Nov.) saying the application had been rejected. Is now seeking the advice as to how best to reply to FH's letter.
