Updates Crook on his work. He has completed a book of eighteenth century Scottish pieces for 12 year old violinists and flautists. An extract from a review is attached (1 page) which refers to his reprinted work 'Music and Society in Lowland Scotland in the Eighteenth Century'. He mentions that he has finally stopped smoking.

Indicates to Crook that the opera is not opening till 24th March. He has undergone laser surgery on both eyes, which makes it difficult for him to read.

Thanks Crook for his hospitality in Cambridge ten days earlier. He mentions his subsequent trip to London and makes reference to the oddness of the opening of the Scottish Parliament on Thursday; he thought the Queen's speech was full of acute, barbed comments.

Thanks Crook for dinner. Indicates that Lucy particularly enjoyed it. He went on to London and met the cellist for whom he is writing an Unaccompanied Cello Suite no. 2 , to be premiered in London next May.

Informs Crook that the Cello Suite now has a scheduled Scottish premiere, an Edinburgh lunchtime concert. He mentions a reseach fellow at Edinburgh University who appears to be largely re-doing Johnson's research of ten years ago. He expresses a concern that the re-roofing of the Second Court of St John's might mean that Crook's rooms are sealed off for the duration.

Note to Crook confirming that the opera is completed. He invites Crook and Mr Robinson to the first night on April 5th at the Royal Academy of Music.

Thanks Crook for his commiserations regarding the cancelled opera. Johnson's clarinet piece is having its premiere in London on June 5th.

Informs Crook that the clarinettist for the forthcoming premiere is Maria Insua Cao. The one page programme is attached. He mentions that his son, Martin has given up TEFL teaching for a job at the Treasury in Whitehall.
