Draft? autograph letter signed to Charles Delaunay

Congratulations on CD's son's marriage. Acknowledgement of gift for CO of copy of 2nd vol. of CD's Lunar theory, for CD's communicating JCA's paper on November meteors, and sends more detailed account communicated to RAS.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Draft autograph letter signed to Charles Delaunay

[second draft of 16/14/1] Acknowledgement of offer of corresponding membership of [French] Academy of Sciences. Sends offprints of published papers. Description of work forthcoming. Defence of work on lunar theory against Plana.

Draft? autograph letter signed to Charles Delaunay

See 36/16/3 for French translation. Pleased that CD's value of Secular acceleration of Moon's mean motion agrees with JCA's. Has carried the work further since publication and has a better method: sets out some more results for CD's use and for him to communicate to the [French] Academy of Sciences on JCA's behalf. Acknowledges copies of papers received from CD.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to W. De La Rue

[JCA's comments on De La Rue's speech on awarding Gold Medal of RAS] Acknowledges copy of Hansen's letter sent. Disagrees with H's assertion that he never contested JCA's theory of the secular acceleration of the moon: H caused LeVerrier to attack JCA and Delaunay, and is now adapting his own theory without admitting it might be wrong.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to W. De La Rue

Comments on De La Rue's speech on awarding Gold Medal of RAS to JCA. Whether a quotation from Herschel should be included. Whether LeVerrier should be mentioned in light of his and Delaunay's part in the controversy over the secular variation of the moon's mean motion. Accuracy of Hansen's and Plana's theories. Encloses copy of Delaunay's letter.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to S. Newcomb

Details of forthcoming sale of Babbage's mathematical books. Death of Delaunay. Letter or extract of letter transcribed for MacAlister's biography.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to G.B. Airy

Explanation of how G.B.A. has misunderstood Delaunay's lunar formula. Agrees about stability of solar system. Would like to see model of transit of Venus.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to G.B. Airy

Has been checking errors in G.B.A's Numerical Lunar Theory: cause is Delaunay's coefficients of parallax. Explains why.
