History
Hiller was born in Shanghai in 1895. He was educated at Berkhamsted School, and came to St John's in 1913 to study for the Mechanical Sciences Tripos. At the outbreak of the First World War he volunteered and was gazetted to the 3rd Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. After a period of training at Chatham, he went to the front in January 1915. He fought at the battle of Neuve Chapelle, being temporarily attached to the South Staffordshire Regiment, and was killed in action at the battle of Festubert on 16 May 1915 while leading a charge on the German trenches.
