History

Gilbert was educated at Nottingham High School and St John's College Cambridge, where he graduated with a First Class in Mathematics in 1913. During the First World War he served in the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Garrison Artillery. After the War, Gilbert pursued a successful career in the Treasury, rising to the post of deputy to the permanent secretary (1953-6). He was knighted in 1943.
