Way, Derek John (1929-2016) law librarian
Derek John Way was born on 22 April 1929 in Newport, Isle of Wight. He matriculated at St John's in 1947, and received his BA in History in 1950 and his MA in 1954. His career in law librarianship took him to Birmingham and then Liverpool; he served as vice-president of the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians from 1997 to 2001 and was made a Life Member in 2002.

Webb, Robert Rumsey (1850-1936) mathematician
After schooling at Monmouth Grammar, Webb came to St John's College in 1868, graduating BA as Senior Wrangler in 1872 and winning the first Smith's prize. In the same year he was elected to a Fellowship, and he subsequently served his College as Junior Bursar (1876-77) and mathematical lecturer (1877-1911). Webb was well known as a coach for the mathematical tripos, at one time teaching 60 hours a week. He died in 1936.
