How was admitted to St John's College in 1900, and graduated BA in 1903. He gained a first class in Part II of the Theological Tripos in 1904, winning the Mason Hebrew Prize, and was elected to a Tyrwhitt Hebrew Scholarship. How was ordained in 1905 and became Hebrew Lecturer at St John's (1906-20) and Precentor and Hebrew Lecturer at Trinity College (1907-20). During the First World War he served with the Royal Army Chaplains Department. From 1920 to 1924 How was Superior of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, Cambridge. He was an Honorary Canon of Liverpool Cathedral (1922-31), Diocesan Missioner at Manchester (1924-6), Rector of St Nicholas, Liverpool (1926-35), and Rural Dean of Liverpool North (1930-5). How served as Chaplain to the King from 1933 to 1938, and as Vicar of West Blatchington, Sussex, 1935-8. He was a Canon of Chichester Cathedral, and was Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway from 1938 to 1952. How died in 1961, aged 79.
