Sinclair, Thomas Alan (1899-1961) classicist
Born in Belfast in 1899, Sinclair was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Queen's University Belfast. He came to St John's College in 1919 to study Classics, and graduated with First Class Honours in 1922. Sinclair then pursued an academic career, holding the following posts: Lecturer in Classics, University College Southampton (1923-26); Fellow of St John's College Cambridge (1926-29); Reader in Classics, Birkbeck College London (1926-34); Professor of Greek, Queen's University Belfast (1934-61). In his time at Queen's Sinclair took a large part in the administration of the University, as Head of the Department of Greek, as Secretary of the Council of Professors, as Registrar, and as Dean of the Faculty of Theology. Sinclair published a number of works, most notably an edition of Hesiod's 'Works and Days' (1932), 'A History of Classical Greek Literature' (1934), and 'A History of Greek Political Thought' (1951). Sinclair married in 1931 and had a son and a daughter.
